SECRETS TO MAKE YOUR DOG’S COAT SHINY AND HEALTHY

A shiny, silky coat is one of the best measures of a dog’s overall health. A shiny coat makes your dog look and feel better. So how do you get that shiny, healthy coat? A lot of it has to do with grooming, but the most important thing is your dog’s nutrition. We’ve put together a guide to help you maintain a shiny coat on your dog.

1. Nutrition
Dogs who are eating low-quality commercial dog foods or homemade diets that aren’t properly balanced may not be getting the proper nutrients they need for a healthy and shiny coat. A dog’s diet should not be deficient in the nutrients needed for healthy hair. Be sure to read labels and find the type of food that is best for your dog based on breed, size, age and any health-related factors.

2. Fleas and Ticks
Taking steps to prevent fleas and ticks from getting into your pets fur is another way to keep their coat healthy and shiny. Fleas and ticks make a dog scratch and persistent scratching will thin the hair.

3. Allergies
Anytime a dog scratches repeatedly, their skin can be damaged and their hair will begin to get thin and unattractive. Regular bathing with a soothing shampoo followed by a leave in conditioner can help keep your dog’s coat looking and feeling good.

4. Add Omega-3 fatty acids.
Flaxseed oil and fish oil supplements can help support a healthy skin and coat. Be careful not to give too much to prevent upset stomachs and digestive issues.

5. Coconut Oil supplements.
A lot of the benefits that coconut oil has for humans applies to dogs as well! In addition to helping with digestive health and preventing infection, a regular addition of coconut oil can help improve skin and coat health, too.

6. Brush regularly
You should brush your dog once every two or three days, Regular brushing stimulates the skin and hair follicles, which increases the natural production of skin oils that make the coat shiny. Brush your dog at least once every other day.

7. Bathe regularly
Regular bathing is not only a matter of hygiene, but it is also necessary for healthy coat. Bathing your dog once a month is enough to keep him clean. You may feel tempted to do it more often, but bathing him too frequently would strip his skin and coat of the essential oils and make his hair dull. It is recommendable that you use moisturizing shampoo that doesn’t cause skin irritations. You can also use some dog conditioner with vitamin E after the bath.

8. Protection
Dogs who have no shelter from the elements and are kept outside most days will have coats that change to be more thick and dry simply to provide natural protection. You can just let it be for the colder winter months, or provide additional shelter to encourage a shinier coat.

9. Oatmeal Bath
Dogs with dull coats often have skin problems, as well. An oatmeal bath helps sooth the skin, tame itching, and leaves the coat soft and shiny. Oatmeal contains vitamin E, so it works as a natural softener. Simply grind one-cup plain oatmeal into a fine powder, fill a tub with lukewarm water, add the powder and stir in until the water appears cloudy, then place your dog in the bath. Pour water on its back and head, avoiding the eyes, and massage for 10-15 minutes. Rinse and pat dry.

10. Make sure your dog’s food stays fresh.
The essential fatty acids that are often included in complete and balanced kibble are prone to oxidation when exposed to air. Definitely wouldn’t want to keep your dog’s food open and around for too long.
