Fruit's That Is Not Safe For Dogs

While there are a number of fruits and vegetables that dogs can safely eat, there are some that can be toxic, even life threatening when ingested. Our focus in the following list will be on fruits, vegetables, and fruit seeds that are toxic to your dog. Some of these foods can be deadly and must not be ingested by dogs, others can be poisonous causing severe sickly reactions. So while it is okay to treat your dog to table scraps every now and then, make sure you do your research on what foods are toxic to dogs to avoid accidental poisoning or worse.

Although some fruits in small portions can be good for your dog (unless your dog is allergic), never offer your dog the following. If your dog accidentally eats the below fruit, contact your veterinarian immediately.

1. Grapes or Raisins

Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure and irreversible kidney damage within 24 hours of being eaten. They have caused many cases of poisoning when ingested by dogs. Some of the Symptoms are Vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, noticeable abdominal pain, little urination, and wobbly and almost weakened movement

2. Avocados

The seed-pit should not be eaten by dogs. If they do, dogs could experience painful oxygen deprivation leading to possible death and pancreatitis. It is still being debated by the scientific community if the actual avocado meat and oils are poisonous, so it may be best to avoid feeding any part of the avocado to dogs. They could cause gastrointestinal irritation. Some fo the symptoms are Trouble breathing or loss of breath, wheezing, vomiting, diarrhea, congestion, fluid build up in the chest area

3. Figs

Figs have caused allergic reactions in some dogs. Also, the fig is grown on the Ficus tree (Ficus benjamina), which causes skin inflammation if your dog comes into contact with it. Ficus plants or trees also cause diarrhea and vomiting if your dog ingests them.

4. Lemon

The lemon tree (Citrus limonia) is toxic to dogs, cats and horses due to its psoralens and essential oils. You don’t want your pet to ingest the seeds, peel, leaves or stem of this tree. Symptoms of lemon plant poisoning are depression, diarrhea and vomiting.

5. Cherries

Cherry plants contain cyanide and are toxic to dogs. Cyanide disrupts cellular oxygen transport, which means that your dog’s blood cells can’t get enough oxygen. If your dog eats cherries, be on the lookout for dilated pupils, difficulty breathing, and red gums, as these may be signs of cyanide poisoning.

6. Currants

currants carry the same level of severe toxicity that grapes and raisins do. Even if you don’t notice sudden vomiting and diarrhea after your dog consumes currants, take your dog to the veterinarian. Just like the other small fruit, currants can cause severe renal failure.

7. Apricot

Like cherries, the seeds, leaves and stems of apricot plants are toxic to dogs. While they are able to consume the pulp of the fruit with no ill effects, caution should be taken if your dog has access to any other parts of the plant. These plants also contain cyanide, and can result in respiratory failure and death.

8. Peaches

Peach contains cyanide, which is deadly to pretty much everyone. The same can be said of plums and other fruits with a solid, centralized core or seed at the centre. The risk to a dog’s digestive tract is also high with pitted fruits. Aside from the natural poison in the core, that seed is large enough to obstruct or block the intestines of your dog.

Always talk to your veterinarian about any treats you feed your dog, including fruit.

Give your dog small portions of fruit only, especially the first time feeding them to your dog. Even though fruit is good for him, fruit is not calorie free. Also, you don’t know if your dog will have an allergic or other adverse reaction, such as gas or an upset stomach.
